How We Work:

At City Roots Nursery and Landscape our goal is to create a sustainable alternative to the typical garden center. We do so by offering a wide selection of native plants, selling only high quality garden supplies and products that are tailored to organic gardening practices.

It Starts with Seeds…

We annually collect local seed and source seed from regional native seed producers. This allows us to keep high genetic diversity in our plant stock and seed plots. Once Seed is gathered for the year, we begin stratifying. For some seeds this means cold/moist treatment in refrigerator, others are direct sown in containers during the winter and allowed to stratify naturally.

Then the Soil…

Our plugs are grown in high quality potting mixes with only natural or organic inputs. Our juvenile and adult plants are potted in custom pine bark mixes. This allows us to have species specific soil mixtures that better suit each plants growing requirements.

And Lastly Time to Grow…

Plugs are upgraded into nursery pots and then grown out in our nursery until they are ready for sale. In some cases this is as little as 2-3 months, but in other cases this can be up to 1-2 years.

THE RETAIL LOCATIONS MISSION:

The retail location is not only a place for people to buy locally grown native plants, but also a space for people to gather, get ideas for their own projects, or just a place to sit and enjoy nature. Our gardens are inspired by some of the different eco-systems of Missouri and Kansas they mimic prairie, savannas, and woodland eco-systems.
